The Upper West Side has one of the most distinctive marble inventories in Manhattan. You are not dealing with the same stone you would find in a new Midtown condo. Many of these buildings went up between 1900 and 1930, and the marble in them — lobby floors, vestibule walls, fireplace surrounds, bathroom wainscoting — has been walked on, wiped down and cleaned with the wrong products for the better part of a century.
That matters, because old marble does not fail the way new marble fails. A 1925 Carrara lobby floor that has lost its polish is not worn out — the stone underneath is still perfectly good, and grinding off the damaged micro-layer and re-polishing restores it. We have done exactly that in buildings along Central Park West, on West End Avenue, and in the brownstone blocks between Broadway and Riverside Drive.
